What happened on April 5, 2023 in Yusufeli, a town in Artvin province on the Çoruh River, where I am from, reveals the effects of a massive energy project in the region. The artificial lake created as part of the Yusufeli Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant Project flooded houses and land. This has an emotional meaning for local residents returning to their homes.

The Yusufeli Dam project in the Eastern Black Sea region has already started to hold water and electricity generation is scheduled to start in May 2023. The dam is the tallest dam in Turkey with its double curvature concrete arch structure, 275 meters high and a total water storage volume of approximately 2.2 billion cubic meters. While this gigantic project has made significant contributions to energy production, it has also changed life in the region. Local residents returning to their homes from the flooded lands are watching the changes brought about by the project and observing this transformation.
